Come and participate in the upcoming book discussion of Severina, a novella by Guatemalan writer Rodrigo Rey Rosa, originally published in Spanish in 2011 and superbly translated into English by Chris Andrews. Rodrigo Rey Rosa is one of the most prominent writers on the contemporary Guatemalan literary scene. He is considered a master in the art of saying more with less.

The narrator, part owner of a bookstore, observes a beautiful young woman shoplifting his books. The bookseller falls in love with the book thief and allows her to continue stealing his books and his soul. Soon there are other serious problems stemming from his infatuation with Severina.  This deceptively simple book is full of surprises, and a strange effect of the author’s clear and precise prose is a sense that much more is going on than is said on the page.

Discover this book, along with some café con medialunas on Thursday, December 3 at 10:30 am in the MPR at the library.
