The Library Community Gardening sessions will be continuing until October 23rd, so feel free to join us every Tuesday and Thursday from 10 am to 2 pm (weather permitting). Come and get your hands dirty before the end of the season!

Although there was a slight frost (and cooler day temperatures) last week, there are still plenty of gardening chores to do. Weeding and watering are required on a weekly basis and most crops are still producing and need to be harvested!

You may have noticed that we have started to cover our warmer climate crops (such as tomatoes and eggplants). These aerated row covers allow light and air to circulate while keeping the plants warm during the night. These extra few degrees will hopefully allow the fruits to ripen on the plants before the end of the season!

No need to cover our lettuces and spinach, which thrive in cooler temperatures. We have a variety of greens in the garden, including spicy mustard and  green and oak leaf lettuces. Cutting a few leaves at a time allows for longer harvesting periods over the month of October. Cabbage family crops (such as kale) also like fall climate as the cold sweetens their taste and makes them even crunchier!
